   Solefald is a Norwegian metal band that was formed by members Lars Are “Lazare” Nedland and Cornelius Jakhelln in August 1995, with Lars singing and playing keyboard/synthesizer/piano and drums, and Cornelius singing and playing guitar and bass. The meaning of the band’s name is best explained in an interview from Century Media Records website. Lazare states “Solefald is an old norse word for sunset. We “stole” it from a painting by the Norwegian artist Theodor Kittelsen

   The lyrics are sung in four languages on this album, English, Norwegian, French, and German. The incorporation of an authentic grand piano, a male choir, authentic Spanish classical acoustic guitar, violin, and saxophone. The music was extremely layered, consisting of composite riffs and angular, colorful leads from the guitars, swirling and beautiful hammond keyboard sections, and powerful and tight drumming. Every song on this album is an epic piece of art.

unexpecT is a metal laboratory mixing elements of black, death, core, symphonic, progressive and melodic metal; classical, operatic, medieval, goth, electro, ambient, psychotic, noise and circus music with an occasional jazzy touch. The septet includes a violin, keyboards/sampling, a singing contemporary dancer, a 9 stringed bass, 2 guitarists/singers and a drum. The vocal performance of the two singers range from an extreme to the other as they alternate between glorious choirs; inhuman screams of deep, high, mid-growl and delirious intensity; theatrical narrations; and clean/sober sections strewn with a female singer who’s angelic voice could melt the will of the most vile politician.

Right, with that introduction out of the way … If you want Avant-Garde … this is it!  I mean, I’ve never listened to anything of the sheer oddity that this band has.  I’m still listening to the album.  It’s well produced and the mixture of parts laid on top of each other is truly mind blowing.  Still, get ready for all kinds of vocals and musical constructions.  This group is just off the wall and just when you think you have a pattern or some semblence of predictability to their music they change it on you!  I really think that people with an ear for music and a taste for something different will really enjoy unexpecT.
